The Full Story ....

About

The Durham Greek & Latin Summer School initially started out in partnership with the Centre for Lifelong Learning at Newcastle University. When the Lifelong Learning Centre at Newcastle closed, the Durham Summer School joined JACT (The Joint Association of Classics Teachers). When the Joint Association of Classics Teachers merged with the Classical Association in 2015, the JACT Summer Schools Trust (JSST) was formed to continue JACT’s work in providing Summer Schools.

The Trust consists of four Summer Schools which work together to minimise administrative costs and maximise opportunities for discovering Classics.

Now in its 32nd year, the JACT Durham Greek & Latin Summer School continues to welcome students from a wide range of backgrounds and age groups (15-80+), as we firmly believe that Classics and Classics education should be accessible to everyone.

Our Mission

At the JACT Durham Greek & Latin Summer School, we believe that the study of Classics (specifically Latin, Greek, and Classical Civilisation), should be accessible to everyone, regardless of age, background, or prior experience.

We warmly welcome students from all walks of life, united by a shared curiosity and passion for the Ancient World, indeed it is our inclusive character and our 'university-style' experience that makes the JACT Durham Greek & Latin Summer School truly unique.

Our mission is to support and enhance the teaching and learning of Latin, Greek, and Classical Civilisation in UK schools and universities. We offer high-quality teaching at all levels, from absolute beginners to those studying beyond A Level, encouraging academic excellence and fostering personal enrichment.

A priority of our work at the JACT Durham Greek & Latin Summer School is to open up access to Classics and Classics adjacent subjects for those who may not have the opportunity to study them at school. Through inclusive teaching, collaborative outreach, and community building, we strive to break down barriers and ensure that Classics is made available to all.
